Sidney Sussex HMO Clampdown

1_UK-Daily-Life-2022.jpg.webp

In response to growing concerns of family homes being turned into inadequate Houses of Multiple Occupation (HMOs) in the Sidney Sussex ward, local Lib Dem campaigner Andy Burton has launched a petition calling for stricter rules in the Council’s housing policy to better protect the local community.

Andy said: “Residents have told me about issues with overcrowding, insufficient parking, and anti-social behaviour due to inadequate HMOs and outdated Council policies. The Council is failing residents and tenants, letting down tenants and residents of the community”.

Andy’s petition calls for mandatory licensing on all HMOs in Sidney Sussex, along with additional discretionary conditions to help prevent anti-social behaviour.

The petition requires 400 signatures to be debated by all 42 councillors at the next public meeting of full council in July. Add your name using the link below to call for change.

By advocating for stricter rules on HMOs, Brian hopes to ensure a safer and more harmonious living environment for all residents.

We, the undersigned, call upon North East Lincolnshire Council to take immediate action to improve housing standards and promote community well-being in the Sidney Sussex ward by implementing the following:-

  • Mandatory Licensing on all HMOs - ensuring that landlords meet certain standards related to property conditions, safety measures, and management practices.

  • Discretionary Conditions on management, use and population of the HMO to include:-

    • steps to be taken to prevent or reduce antisocial behaviour by occupiers or visitors

    • facilities and equipment to be in good working order and meet the prescribed standards in section 65 Housing Act 2004 about the suitability of the house (for example, requiring adequate fire precautionary, heating, washing and kitchen facilities)

    • any repairs or works to be completed within a particular time

    • the licence holder or manager to attend training courses on any code of practice approved under section 233 Housing Act 2004
