Pensioners - A Call For Action

In response to the Labour Government's announcement to end universal Winter Fuel Payments and limit eligibility solely to those receiving Pension Credits and other benefits, the Grimsby and Cleethorpes Liberal Democrat group successfully introduced a motion at this month's full council titled "Standing Up for Pensioners".

Moved by Cllr. Nicola Aisthorpe and seconded by Cllr. Loyd Emmerson, this motion aimed to protect our vulnerable pensioners and underscored our commitment to addressing the critical issues facing our community's seniors.

During the debate, Liberal Democrats voiced serious concerns that the Labour Government's changes would exclude many low- to middle-income pensioners from receiving essential support.

Both the Conservative and Labour parties acknowledged the validity of our motion and contributed to it. Liberal Democrat Councillors welcomed the additions, as it is our collective duty as a Council to work together for the common good of our area. However, while we appreciate their additions, one must wonder: why hasn’t the local Labour MP taken a stronger stance against this decision?

That said, the Labour Party's conduct during the debate was nothing short of disappointing. They were repeatedly warned and reprimanded by the Mayor for inappropriate behaviour and straying off topic. Rather than engaging in constructive dialogue, they opted to launch attacks and dredge up issues from over a decade ago. This tactic not only distracts from the pressing concerns surrounding the Labour government's current policies but also serves as a feeble attempt to shift blame.

Their defence of the indefensible of their Government to eliminate Universal Winter Fuel Payments is particularly troubling. This move will leave many vulnerable pensioners without essential support just as energy prices are set to rise again in October. It's unacceptable that, while pensioners struggle to make ends meet during this ongoing cost of living crisis, energy companies continue to pay themselves massive bonuses.

Adding to our disappointment was the Independent group leader’s comments about encouraging people back into work during a debate focused on supporting pensioners. Such remarks were completely misplaced, especially when discussing those who have already dedicated their lives to building our society.

Nevertheless, the overall motion was unanimously agreed.

The Liberal Democrats were the first to highlight the urgent issues surrounding the Labour government's decision to end universal Winter Fuel Payments, and we are pleased that other groups joined us in advocating for the welfare of our pensioners.
