Mayor raises almost £2000 from Walkathon

Mayor of North East Lincolnshire Councillor Steve Beasant after finishing the Ørsted Great Grimsby 10k 2024 - he will now embark on a 24-hour walk for charity

The Mayor of North East Lincolnshire has reflected on his biggest challenge yet, after completing a, 24-hour walkathon and raising almost £2000 for charity.

Councillor Steve Beasant, Mr. Mayor, walked for 24 hours in Grant Thorold Park on Durban Road in Grimsby, from 10am on Saturday 27th July to 10am on Sunday 28th July, to help raise funds for four chosen local charities.

He will be donating all funds received to Nurtrio, Friendship at Home, Jax’s Stoma Charity, YMCA Humber. Both Nurtrio and Friendship at Home are very close to Mr. Mayor’s heart, with the pair looking after his wife Carol.

As well as Nurtrio and Friendship at Home, funds raised from the Mayor's challenge will also go to Jax Batty, a young Grimsby boy with a stoma who has raised thousands of pounds for charity, and YMCA Humber.

Steve said, "Jax lives round the corner from me and he's such an inspirational young lad, he's amazing. With YMCA Humber, they support young homeless people, I've supported them for many years with various projects and they're another amazing charity.

"All of these local causes need support. We're in difficult times where funding is tight.

“I am really pleased to have completed this massive challenge. It was tough but at the same time it was amazing. Firstly, I will take this opportunity to thank everyone for giving me support throughout the event, they were incredible bringing me refreshments, walking with me throughout the day, and the night. I could not have done it without them.

“Also a massive thanks to everyone who made their wonderful donation. Their donations have swelled this year’s Mayoral Charities (Nurtrio, Friendship at Home, Jaxs Stoma Appeal and YMCA Humber); from this marathon walk, we have to date received £1,810 and people are still sponsoring us. All donations are still welcome.

“After the event, I felt great. No aches or pains, but 5 hours into the walk I was concerned that I would not complete the challenge. At that point I hit a mental block but realised I was fundraising for four amazing charities. From that point onwards my focus was on completing the walk and raising as much money as possible for these amazing charities.

“This was my biggest challenge ever, but what next. We are already planning other fund raising initiatives and there will be further opportunities to donate to these four amazing charities.”
